Spring 2006 Special Project Challenge Grants

$50,000  to South Bend Heritage Foundation to support the rehabilitation of the Engman Natatorium. 

$45,000  to Housing Authority of the City of South Bend to support the county's lead abatement program.  

$30,000  to University of Notre Dame to support the expansion of the Take Ten conflict resolution skills program to local high schools.

$25,000 to the University of Notre Dame for their summer National Youth Sports Program (NYSP).  NYSP is a five week sports enrichment camp that exposes students ages 10-16 to a collegiate atmosphere at an early age and instills higher education as a natural life goal.  Ninety percent of its participants receive free or reduced lunch and/or reside in subsidized housing in St. Joseph County.  Campers take swimming lessons and are provided instruction in at least two other sports. 

$22,000.00  to LOGAN to support the expansion of the capacity of the Protective Services Board.

$21,550.00  to Hannah's House to update its heating and cooling systems and make other energy-efficient updates.  Hannah's House provides, shelter, programming and staff support for the physical, emotional and spiritual well being of pregnant women who are in crisis and choose life for their babies.  The typical age range of residents is 17-23.  On average, 25-30 women are served on an annual basis.

$15,000  to CeaseFire South Bend to suppport the hiring of an additional street outreach worker.

$5,000  to Food Bank of Northern Indiana to expand the Food 4 Kids program.

$1,450.00  to St. Joseph County Health Department to support the hosting of the Lead-Based Paint Worker Training.
