LOGAN - 2000 Winner
Logan's
strong leadership, people-centered approach, and powerful advocacy efforts
on behalf of mentally disabled citizens since its formation in 1950 were
cited as key reasons the organization was chosen.
"What tipped the scale in Logan's favor is that it has maintained an
extraordinary degree of excellence, dedication, and creativity for fifty
years. This kind of staying power deserves to be celebrated," according
to selection committee chairman Daniel Neufelder.
Over the years, Logan has advocated powerfully on
behalf of disabled citizens. Logan fights to give these citizens the
opportunity to live fuller, more independent lives, outside of institutions
as contributing members of our community. Such advocacy efforts are
unusual among service providers like Logan which tend to avoid situations
where they might anger the lawmakers who have power over their funding.
But Logan never forgets the families it exists to serve, and places
their interests above all other considerations. St. Joseph County is
a finer, more civilized, more decent place as a result of Logan's efforts.
