Saint Joseph Health Center - 2004 Winner
Saint Joseph Health Center was honored as the 2004 recipient of the
Leighton Award for Nonprofit Excellence for its remarkable commitment
to the working poor. The clinic's founder Sister Maura Brannick, clinical
director Carla Bice, the staff, and many volunteers (including physicians
and dentists) have created an oasis for people who often have nowhere
else to turn.
From humble beginnings 15 years ago providing medical screenings to low-income
uninsured people the center is now a 10,000 square foot, full-service,
multicultural organization. Remarkably 65 volunteer physicians
and 11 volunteer dentists provide healthcare and dental care to the Clinic's
low-income, uninsured clients. Pharmaceuticals, literacy services,
support groups, an exercise room and a food bank are among the many services
provided over the years to meet the full range of their clients' healthcare
needs.
