Robert P. and Clara I. Milton lived for
many years on the West side of South Bend. Robert managed one of the city's leading drug
stores at the turn of the 20th century. The Miltons did not
have children. Upon their deaths (Robert in 1931; Clara in
1942), they bequeathed their estate for the purpose of creating a
retirement home for seniors.
In 1982, the retirement home was sold. Through
the Community Foundation’s Robert P. & Clara I. Milton
Fund, however, the Milton’s generous bequest is still being
dedicated to meeting senior housing needs for our aging population
in ways that promote dignity, independence, and quality of life.
The Community Foundation is studying the current
and projected housing challenges facing our senior citizens and seeking
innovative and effective ways to address those challenges. Primary emphasis
will be given to efforts serving the poorest and most vulnerable
seniors.
Charities that are dedicated to meeting
senior housing and related needs are encouraged to apply for funding. Application
deadlines are November 1 and May 1.
