Scholarship Funds

Learn more about the wide range of scholarship funds we administer.

Below, you’ll find a list of some of the scholarship funds that have been created through the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County. Click on a fund name, and you’ll find details about the specific scholarship. As you’ll see, many were created to honor the memory of a loved one. Some of the scholarships offer assistance to children of local employers, students who have chosen to attend a specific college or university, or students who have committed to a particular area of study. Each listing includes details for students who are interested in applying, as well as how you can contribute to that particular fund.

The 1st Source Scholarship Fund was created to support the educational aspirations of children of employees of 1st Source who a) reside in geographic locations in Indiana and Southwest Michigan where 1st Source maintains physical depository institutions and b) who are accepted into and attend 2- or 4-year degree programs at regional campuses of state public colleges and universities.  For more information and/or to apply for this scholarship, please contact our scholarships staff, or call (574) 232-0041. The Ancilla College Fund was established to provide scholarships for students attending Ancilla College. Parents of Thomas H. Barry, a Marian High School graduate, created the Thomas H. Barry Memorial Scholarship to honor the memory of their son, who passed away far too early. The Thomas H. Barry scholarship is for Marian High School graduates who demonstrate potential and aptitude in art. Details about this scholarship are available here. The Beaty Family Scholarship Fund supports the educational aspirations of an outstanding John Glenn High School senior who wishes to pursue an undergraduate education. The scholarship is awarded based on financial need and academics.  For more information, please email the John Glenn High School Guidance Department. The Jack & Helen Benjamin Scholarship was established to support the educational aspirations of students from Mishawaka High School.  Both Jack and Helen Benjamin lived frugal lives, always with the mindset of being very generous benefactors to the young men and women of Mishawaka. They were never blessed with children of  their own and wanted to make a difference. The Big C Lumber Fund was created to support the educational aspirations of children of employees of Big C Lumber who wish to pursue an undergraduate education at an accredited, tax-exempt institution. Boorda

The Anita F. Boorda Scholarship for the Performing Arts was established by the Broadway Theatre League to honor their beloved former Executive Director.  During her tenure with BTL, Anita was responsible for contracting shows, marketing, negotiating with unions, and maintaining contact with New York touring and production companies.  Her efforts led to South Bend becoming a regular stop on the New York touring circuit.  This scholarship aims to support students from St. Joseph, Elkhart, Marshall, Kosciusko, Fulton, Pulaski, Starke or LaPorte Counties in Indiana or Berrien and Cass Counties in Michigan who plan to purse a degree in Performing Arts, Music, Theatre, Dance or Production through a full-time course of study.  Preference shall be given to students engaged in the performing arts during their high school careers.

The Mr. and Mrs. Charles B. Burkhart Scholarship was created by Mrs. Janette Burkhart-Miller to assist students in the Leighton School of Business and Economics at IU South Bend complete their studies and remain on a path to graduate within four years. This award provides incoming sophomores in the Leighton School of Business tuition assistance at Indiana University South Bend. Dr. Richmond E. Calvin was a professor at Indiana University South Bend for 30 years until his retirement in 2002. This scholarship fund was created to support African-American students at Indiana University South Bend pursuing an undergraduate degree in education; it serves as a lasting reflection of Dr. Calvin’s commitment to the educators of the future. Created by friends of Dr. Virginia B. Calvin, this scholarship fund was established in honor of Dr. Calvin’s work as superintendent of the South Bend Community School Corporation. It is awarded to a female graduate from the South Bend Community School Corporation who attends Ivy Tech. The Chamberlin, Hull, Hummer & Snider Memorial Scholarship was established by Kyle and Katie Chamberlin to honor their grandparents by supporting the educational aspirations of students from either Penn or Mishawaka High School. To be considered, students must demonstrate academic merit and financial need and plan to attend an accredited 2- or 4-year public or private institution of higher learning to pursue a full-time course of study. The Bert and Angela Churstowski Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by Mary Ann Chrustowski in loving memory of her parents.  The scholarship will support the educational aspirations of St. Joseph County students with an excellent academic record in science and/or music who wish to pursue an undergraduate education in a science field at an accredited four year college or university. The Coquillard Family Scholarship Fund was created by Mr. and Mrs. George Coquillard to support the educational aspirations of St. Joseph County students attending Ivy Tech Community College South Bend. Donald C. Currier was awarded a degree with distinction from the Purdue University School of Mechanical Engineering in 1926.  Seventy-three years later, his wife Marion established the Currier Scholarship in his memory to benefit students from St. Joseph County pursuing engineering degrees from the Purdue University School of Engineering. The Warren A. and Marjorie S. Deahl Family Scholarship Fund was created to provide scholarships to St. Joseph County students who plan to attend a college or university in Indiana. The Officer Paul R. Deguch Memorial Scholarship Fund was created to honor Officer Deguch, a public servant who lost his life in the course of duty. This scholarship supports students pursuing an undergraduate degree in Criminal Justice at Indiana University South Bend. The Michael and Constance Dillon Marian Legacy Fund was established to provide scholarships for students who attend Marian High School.  Recipients must demonstrate financial need and be a “legacy” (a student whose parent and/or grandparent is a Marian High School graduate). Frank and Lori Ermeti Scholarship Fund for IUSB was established to provide scholarships for students attending Indiana University South Bend who demonstrate financial need, are residents of St. Joseph County and graduated from either Saint Joseph or Mishawaka High School. The Francis and Loretta Ernst Scholarship Fund was created to support the educational aspirations of St. Joseph County students who wish to pursue an undergraduate education at any accredited two or four year college or university. Thomas A. Gerencher taught English at Saint Joseph High School for more than 30 years. This Memorial Fund provides an award for an outstanding English teacher AND a scholarship for an outstanding English student each year, honoring this legendary educator who inspired so many. Family members of Heather Hammer, a Marian High School student whose life ended much too soon, created the Heather Anne Hammer Memorial Scholarship to honor the memory of this generous young woman and to help deserving students obtain a Catholic college preparatory education at Marian. The Rose J. Horak Scholarship Fund was established by Joseph C. Horak in honor of his mother. Rose J. Horak appreciated the value of an education, believing that “readers are leaders, and leaders are readers.” This scholarship supports the educational aspirations of students who plan to pursue a full-time course of study at either a public or private institution, with preference given to students attending schools in either Indiana or Michigan. The IBEW Local 153 Scholarship Fund was created to support the educational aspirations of children of members of the local chapter of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers union. The Bill and Diane Killilea Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by the Killilea family to honor Diane’s life and the values which were important to her including faith, volunteerism and education. When her loving husband Bill died, the scholarship added his name, as well. This award provides support to attend Marian High School. Details about this scholarship are available here. The Olga Logan Larimer Scholarship Fund for Good Shepherd Montessori was established to provide financial support for Latino/Hispanic children attending Good Shepherd Montessori School in South Bend. The Felicia A. Leon-Driscoll Scholarship Fund for Good Shepherd Montessori was created to provide financial support for children attending Good Shepherd Montessori School in South Bend. The fund was established in memory of Felicia, who worked with children as a catechist at Good Shepherd, a school she founded alongside her husband, Dan, and other parents committed to the well-being of the child. The Tameka Luten Memorial Teacher Scholarship Fund, which was created in memory of a seven-year-old South Bend girl who was tragically struck and killed by a school bus in 1993, was established to help local students pursue and advance a professional career in teaching.  This award provide scholarships for students attending Indiana University South Bend who demonstrate financial need, are residents of St. Joseph County and are in pursuit of a bachelor’s degree in education. Rita Lyzen

The William and Rita Lyzen Scholarship Fund was created to provide scholarships to Mishawaka High School students who are residents of St. Joseph County and plan to attend a college or university in Indiana to pursue a full-time 2- or 4-year plan of study. Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5. Rita Lyzen, who created the scholarship fund, taught business at Mishawaka High School for 33 years and felt a deep connection to the school. The Charles Martin “Touch a Life” Scholarship was established by leaders in the African-American community to create a meaningful and lasting tribute to a remarkable man who mentored hundreds of students throughout this community. The Charles Martin “Touch a Life” Scholarship provides academically motivated African-American students from St. Joseph County with tuition assistance and an opportunity to give back to their community while gaining meaningful work experience in the process. Application guidelines for this scholarship are available on our main scholarships page. Friends and family of Katie McCloskey, an Adams High School graduate who was killed in the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center, created the Katie McCloskey Memorial Scholarship to honor the memory of this remarkable young woman. The Jack and Carol McGann Fund was created to support the educational aspirations of low-income women and/or minority students who attend Indiana University South Bend. The Michael J. McMahon Memorial Scholarship Fund was established with a bequest from Dr. Michael J. McMahon in appreciation for the excellent education, guidance, and support he received while attending Saint Joseph’s High School. The award provides tuition assistance to students attending Saint Joseph’s High School based on both academic potential and financial need. The Peggy J. Millbern Scholarship Fund was established to provide nursing scholarships to St. Joseph County students attending IU South Bend through Memorial Health Foundation. The W. Scott and Janette Burkhart Miller Scholarship Fund supports students at Stanley Clark School who demonstrate financial need. Mishawaka Rotary Club Scholarship Fund was established to support the educational aspirations of students from Mishawaka High School.  To be eligible, a student must be a senior at Mishawaka High School with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and plan to pursue a full-time course of study at an accredited college or university.  This scholarship will provide a one-time award of $1,500 for tuition and fees. Family of Anthony “Tony” Moore, a Marian High School graduate whose life was tragically cut short in an airplane accident, established the Anthony David Moore Memorial Scholarship to honor the memory of this special young man. The NAACP KeyBank Scholarship, which is administered by Indiana University South Bend, provides $1,000 in annual tuition assistance for an African-American student from St. Joseph County, who has a minimum GPA of 3.0, and has been accepted into IUSB. This scholarship is renewable for up to four years. The NAACP South Bend Branch Scholarship, which is administered by Indiana University South Bend, provides $1,000 in annual tuition assistance for an African-American student who lives in South Bend, has a minimum GPA of 3.0, and has been accepted into IUSB. This scholarship is renewable for up to four years. The first NAACP Scholarship will be awarded in the spring of 2014, for the subsequent school year. South Bend NAACP President Rev. The National Coalition of 100 Black Women Inc. (NC100BW) South Bend Area Chapter Scholarship, which is administered by Indiana University South Bend, provides up to $1,000 in annual tuition assistance for a female African-American student who has graduated from a South Bend area high school (St. Joseph County), has a minimum GPA of 2.5, and is pursuing a degree through a full-time baccalaureate course of study at Indiana University South Bend. Preference will be given to students pursuing degrees related to communication and journalism. This scholarship is renewable for up to four years of full-time undergraduate study. The Robert O. Neeser/Cassady, Neeser & Brasseur Memorial Scholarship Fund was created to support the educational aspirations of children of employees of Cassady, Neeser & Brasseur who wish to pursue an undergraduate education. Reed A. Oei

The Reed A. Oei Memorial Scholarship Fund was established to support a graduating Saint Joseph High School senior exhibiting exceptional academic performance, ability and interest in mathematics, an intent to major in mathematics or computer science, and exceptional character. The scholarship memorializes Reed A. Oei, a St. Joe alumnus who died on April 15, 2022, at 23 years old after a year-long battle with bile-duct cancer. Reed graduated magna cum laude as a true math and computer science double major from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and was pursuing his PhD in Math at UCLA under a Graduate Research Fellowship from the National Science Foundation. In his spare time, Reed enjoyed playing tennis, hiking, camping, and especially cooking.

The award will be announced annually at the spring Academic Honors Assembly at Saint Joseph High School. The Ruth Carmean Putnam Memorial Scholarship Fund was created to provide two kinds of scholarships. In his senior year, Clay High School football player Justin Wozny was honored by his peers with the annual Sportsmanship Award for setting an example with his exemplary character and good citizenship. Tragically, Justin’s life was cut short.
