Community Foundation Receives $3 Million Challenge Grant to Support Library Project

Judd Leighton Foundation Helps Partners to "Dream Big"

In support of its $10 million commitment to the expansion and renovation of the St. Joseph County Public Library’s downtown Main Library, the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County has received a major challenge grant from the Judd Leighton Foundation. The Judd Leighton Foundation will provide $3 million to match contributions made to the Community Foundation towards this project.

Judd Leighton, and now the Judd Leighton Foundation, have a long history of allowing the Community Foundation to “dream big.” The Community Foundation’s unprecedented partnership with the St. Joseph County Public Library and the City of South Bend will create a stunning new resource for our community—and that’s the kind of smart collaboration that Judd Leighton always encouraged and championed.

“Our library has changed constantly as community needs have changed over time,” says Rose Meissner, president of the Community Foundation. “The St. Joseph County Public Library and the Community Foundation decided to ask ‘what would the Main Library look like, if it were designed with all these current and evolving roles in mind?’ When finished, the new library will engage and delight people of every age and walk of life for generations to come. ”

Gifts will be matched dollar-for-dollar until the total amount of the challenge is reached.

Gifts can be made directly to the Community Foundation, either:
